HIV-positive patients declared free of the virus after they underwent bone
marrow transplantation for the treatment of cancer. Even now both the patient
was not taking HIV drugs again and this is exciting news.
The success raised hopes that
someday in the future HIV could be cured, not just controlled by drugs such
patients now excruciating.
Results were presented at the
international meeting on AIDS in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Data from two patients
was also presented last year at a meeting in Washington DC, USA, by the same
scientists, Timothy Henrich and Daniel Kuritzkes. But at that time the two
patients not to stop taking AIDS drugs.
The second patient was undergoing
treatment for blood cancer at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, USA. Both
also require stem cell therapy on spinal cord, which would trigger the immune
cells attack the disease, including those infected with human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV).
Unlike most patients receiving a
spinal implant, they never stop taking AIDS drugs for chemotherapy preparation.
Doctors suspect that keep HIV levels remain low so that their new immune cells
could not be infected.
Now these two patients had
stopped taking AIDS drugs, the patient for 7 weeks and the other was not taking
medication for 15 weeks. HIV virus has so far not been returned.
However, scientists say the
patient can not be said to be cured because it is likely the virus will come
back.
Previously, Timothy Brown,
American men are treated in Berlin, also known cured of HIV after undergoing
stem cell transplantation. He underwent bone marrow cells mutated gene called
CCR5 that prevents the HIV virus infects.
Reinforces the notion that
conditions how HIV can be cured. One US-based biotechnology company, Sangamo,
is currently developing a gene therapy trial for modifying genes.
But from the patient in Brigham
can be concluded that the "cure" may not require the CCR5 gene
mutation.
"It seems that the immune
system Timothy Brown is getting a very strong layer," said Kevin Robert
Frost, chief of AIDS research foundation.
In March also reported that a
toddler he was cured of HIV after getting intensive therapy after a known
infection.
The results of this study
reinforce the encouraging hope that someday could be cured of HIV. But
according to Frost it may still be a long time.
"I think there is no one
treatment that can be effective at all, at least not yet. Scientists continue
to work to find a variety of therapies which can give positive results,"
he said so later this deadly disease can be overcome in the future.

the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease and the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation.
Hopefully
